Poughkeepsie Contra Dance

Date: June 21, 2008 (3rd Saturday)

No Dance tonight, see you in October!

What is a contra dance?

A contra dance is a little like a square dance, but more fun! The figures are the same, for example, swing your partner, do-si-do, but the arrangement of dancers is such that you do not have to know the figures well to do the dance. The music is traditional New England folk music - jigs and reels, often with a jazzy twist. A caller announces the figures as the dance progresses. Beginners are very welcome at this dance. We love beginners! It's a very welcoming group, dress is very casual.

What is a slow jam?

A slow jam is for musicians. All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. Experienced musicians lead common contra dance tunes at slow tempos, everyone else follows along. This is a great opportunity for muscians to learn the contra repertoire, to develop their ear, and to meet other musicians!
